When you pass this on Route 23 going to Hillsdale, you have to turn to look.
Signs said that they were open, so, I pulled over. How could I not?
The Purple Barn is “Open for Buiness” most days, 10-4:30pm.
Susan will greet you. She said that the wedding dress weighs about twenty pounds.
Susan runs the Purple Barn and is a self-described “one-man band”. She is the seventh of eight children. In 1974, her parents bought the barn and the house next door. She said they JUST had enough money for the downpayment, but did not have enough for the closing costs. Her parents wrote a check, knowing that there was not enough money in the bank. Her mother, who did house cleaning, just happened to clean the bank president’s house that weekend – and he forgave the closing costs!
The Purple Barn is minimalist Marie Kondo’s nightmare. It is jam-packed with stuff, however, much of it does spark joy! If you walk down an aisle, it is very likely that both shoulders will brush against the racks of clothing. There’s plenty of clothes, records, VHS tapes and CDs, games, shoes. Who knows what you’ll find!
The family started a yard/garage sale in the barn on the weekends. The sales grew and people kept coming back, for almost fifty years.

I always wondered what the story was with that barn. Thanks for letting me know.
You went to the purple barn without me? ?
