Artist’s Reception
Chimba
Saturday, June 12th, 2021
6-8pm
Window On Hudson is thrilled to present Chimba (Chiarra Jonelle Hughes Mba) in her first solo exhibition. On view in the windows are large paintings representing Women of the Earth, pregnant with child, hope, and history. Indoors, intricately illustrated long planks tell universal stories. Please join us as we celebrate Reproducing Life: Conception and Chimba …
Chimba describes “Reproducing Life” in the following way, “This body of work – I don’t think it is an accident that it is called a ‘body’ of work – is about reproduction and what it means for the Woman. We can birth so many things other than a child. Birth can have a healing effect on the mother and extended family. Throughout time a birth has been a cause for celebration – more so in the past. The language I use on my canvases reflects that time.
“I am curious about the journey of all Women. Pregnant Women. Mothers. Mother Earth. Queens. Our roots. I paint myself. I am curious about my own journey. My journey, my artistic journey and my life’s journey, changed as I worked on these paintings. If you try to make everything as it should be, it won’t become what it can be.”
Our reception for Chimba will take place as part of the 2econd Saturday Hudson Gallery Crawl. 20 galleries and 50 shops & restaurants will be staying open until 9pm on June 12th. Please come congratulate Chimba and then visit the twenty other galleries and fifty shops and restaurants that will be staying open late.
Reproducing Life: Conception is on view June 2 – 28, 2021. If you are unable to attend the reception but would like to see the indoor works please make an appointment for private viewing.
