I go to events. Sometimes, I don’t always know what they’re about, or I forget, or I don’t read the description thoroughly.
Last month, I found myself at two events – Friday and Saturday nights, back-to-back – both were about suicide. I had a suicide-themed weekend. It was unplanned. Because who would plan a weekend of two suicide-related events? Wednesday Addams?
The two events were totally different. Heathers is an 80s dark comedy about teen suicide, and Every Brilliant Thing is a one-man show performed at the Park Theater. Every Brilliant Thing tells the story of how a man deals with mental illness in his family, having a mother with suicidal tendencies.
Every Brilliant Thing is an emotional rollercoaster of a show that breaks the ‘fourth wall’ and includes the audience in the performance. The show’s subject matters of suicide and depression brought out raw emotions. One audience member interrupted the show and started talking about their own experiences with family. The performer, Scott Barrow, stepped off the stage and gave the audience member a hug before continuing.
In Every Brilliant Thing, a seven-year old boy during his mother’s first suicide attempt, started a list of brilliant things in his life. The first item on the list was ‘ice cream’. Other brilliant things included riding a bicycle downhill, the smell of freshly-cut grass and the first time opening a new book. Throughout his life, the character went back to his list and added to it. He asked others to contribute. Ultimately, there were a million brilliant things on the list.
Inspired by this show, I decided to start keeping a list of Wonderful Things About Hudson. It will be a page on the main menu, under Trixie Tips, and you can refer to it whenever. Please feel free to add to the list in the comments. I’ll keep it updated, and moderated. (I’m trying to keep it pleasant, and not snarky.)
