FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Saturday, April 27th marks the opening of the Columbia County Historical Society’s Mercantile at the Vanderpoel House, a charming new shop nestled within the historic Vanderpoel House. The shop offers a unique shopping experience that pays homage to the rich history of Columbia County, New York.
Combining the charm of a general store with the allure of an antique shop, Columbia County Historical Society board trustee and shop creator/buyer Melissa Davis has meticulously assembled a thoughtful range of products, including books, homeware, gifts, and locally crafted goods, with many of them exclusive to the shop. Hillsdale’s Hudson Valley Letterpress has created custom letterpress gift tags, Kinderhook’s Dough and Batter has created Vanderpoel House cookies, and Mary Ahern of Hudson’s Florent has created a bespoke natural perfume- No.16- that is inspired by the original gardens on the property. And every purchase in the jewel-box of a shop (225 square feet) directly supports CCHS’s efforts to preserve, interpret, and present the history and culture of Columbia County, and every item tells a story.

“My vision for the Mercantile at the Vanderpoel House was to create a destination where locals and visitors alike can connect with the heritage and beauty of Columbia County while shopping for a gift or a treat for themselves,” said Melissa Davis. “I was so inspired by the Vanderpoel House, and many of the products in the shop directly reflect the house’s history.”
CCHS Executive Director Lisa Weilbacker adds, “Melissa’s efforts have gone above and beyond our expectations and we are thrilled with the results. The Mercantile promises to delight all.”
The Vanderpoel House is one of the finest examples of Federal architecture in Columbia County and is located at 16 Broad Street, in the heart of Kinderhook. Store hours are Friday- Sunday, 11-4.
I hope they will have some artistic Hudson refrigerator magnets. The only ones that I have ever seen in Hudson are in Tradewinds- small wooden ones with whales and the word Hudson.
