Hudson Film Festival’s 2nd edition, taking place Friday, August 9 – Sunday, August 11, 2024 in Hudson, New York, is delivering on its promise to champion diversity, underrepresented films, local filmmakers and artists, and building community partnerships.
The festival kicks off on Friday, August 9 with The Supremes At Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat, in partnership with Operation Unite NY and Hudson Sankofa Black Arts & Cultural Festival. Based on the 2013 New York Times best-selling novel of the same name, writer/director Tina Mabry delivers a touching story about the bonds of lifelong female friendship. Academy Award nominee Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Emmy award-winner Uzo Aduba, and BET award-winner Sanaa Lathan star as three women whose friendship withstands the test of time and life’s ups and downs in the tumultuous 1960’s. The film will be released August 23, 2024 by Searchlight Pictures/Hulu.
The 2024 festival’s diverse 3-day slate includes Hudson area local filmmaker Zia Anger’s funny, genre-busting and poignant My First Film, starring Odessa Young, Devon Ross, and Cole Doman. This unique, nostalgic and moving film highlights the festival’s mission to showcase local and female filmmaking voices. My First Film will be available exclusively on MUBI soon.
Sundance double award-winning documentary Daughters depicts an uplifting story of redemption and the power of father-daughter bonds to heal and reclaim family life and personal purpose during and after incarceration. From filmmakers Angela Patton and Natalie Rae, the film will be released by Netflix on August 14, 2024.
Sundance Grand Jury Prize winning documentary A New Kind of Wilderness, by writer/director Silje Evensmo Jacobsen, follows a family’s journey from an idyllic wild and free existence shattered by tragedy to a new life within society. Both intimate and universal, this beautifully observed and genuinely impactful portrait of a family explores grief, resisting change, belonging and resilience.
In celebration of the 15-year anniversary of the release of Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox, Hudson Film Festival will present a free screening of the Searchlight Pictures film in partnership with the Hudson Area Library and Story Screen Cinema Hudson. The Cannes Film Festival award-winning crowd-pleaser The Taste of Things, an IFC Films release from writer/director Anh Hung Tran, will take this year’s “International Spotlight” slot, closing out the festival.
Acclaimed short films screening at the festival include Essex Girls from director Yero Timi-Biu and writer/actor Busayo Ige,and OMW by filmmaker Mary Dauterman.
