The Mac-Haydn Theatre is thrilled to announce the debut of the musical comedy “Something Rotten!” for three egg-straordinary weeks from August 15 to September 1. This uproarious show, a mash-up of 16th-century Shakespeare and 21st-century Broadway, offers a fresh take on the musical theatre genre with its family friendly story and Tony-nominated score.
“Something Rotten!” is a musical within a musical that will have audiences laughing and dancing in their seats. With songs such as “God, I Hate Shakespeare,” “Welcome to the Renaissance,” “Will Power,” “Right Hand Man,” and “A Musical,” this production promises to deliver a night full of extravagant production numbers and heartfelt comedy.
Under the direction of John Saunders, with choreography by Mandy Modic and musical direction by Eric Shorey, Something Rotten! follows the comedic journey of underappreciated brothers Nick (played by Andrew Burton Kelley) and Nigel Bottom (played by Kylan Ross). Struggling to create the next big play while living in Shakespeare’s shadow, the brothers discover the concept of the musical, leading to uproarious encounters with societal norms, family conflicts, and the egotistical Bard himself.
The cast features a dynamic blend of new and returning talent, including Mac-Haydn debuts from Dashawn McClinton as Thomas Nostradamus and Tristan Caldwell as Brother Jeremiah. Returning stars include Madison Stratton as Beatrice Bea Bottom, Xander James as Shakespeare, Amber Mawande-Spytek as Minstrel, Belle Babcock as Portia, and Kevin Weldon as Lord Clapham/Master of Justice.
The production features scenic design by Emma Cummings, lighting design by Andrew Gmoser, costume design by Bethany Marx, sound design by Sean McGinley, hair and makeup by Emily Allen, and props design by Clay Cates.
