I fell off the wagon on Wednesday night at Wm. Farmer and Sons.
A friend/temptress wanted to go to the BBQ Pop-up at Wm. Farmer & Sons (in partnership with their sister restaurant, The Gem), and I reluctantly agreed to a night of meat-eating even though I’m vegetarian.
I’m 95% vegetarian (a 95 is still an ‘A’), which means at three meals/day, about four meals a month can be non-vegetarian. Most times, I fall off the vegetarian wagon because there’s no other option available. If I’m going to a planned meat-based meal, then it better be worth it.
The BBQ Pop-Up at Wm. Farmer & Sons & The Gem was definitely worth it. Not only was it a delicious meal, but it was also reasonably priced. The bill for two hearty platters with one shared dessert (enough for two) was under $50 (plus tip). The server gives you a caddy of a half dozen different BBQ sauces to dip and taste, and you can test your spice tolerance level.
Maybe you’re from the south, so the BBQ sauces will be familiar and make sense. Or, maybe you’re from South Jersey, and just need an evening out.
The staff was super friendly, the service was excellent, and on a balmy end-of-winter evening, the environment was warm and cozy. Since it’s mid-week, you are likely to bump into friends or neighbors at the nearby table or bar.

As per their website:
Beginning February 19th, every Wednesday & Thursday, staples from The Gem such as smoked Free-Range Chicken Wings, Pimento Cheese & Pork Rinds and North Carolina Pulled Pork, will be available in addition to our the regular beloved Wm. Farmer & Son offerings.

Sometimes, we get stuck in a rut. I’m guilty of it.
We’ll go to the same restaurants because we know what to expect – good or bad. Wm. Farmer and Sons challenge us to shake it up a bit – and get outside our comfort zones – at least on a Wednesday or a Thursday night.
If a 95% vegetarian can eat at a BBQ dinner pop-up and have a great experience, then a carnivore/omnivore will really love it.
Please do me a favor, just don’t tell PETA.
Thanks.
