The Whale Theatre, in association with the Tectonic Theater Project presents Truman Capote’s “A Christmas Memory & The Thanksgiving Visitor” this month at the Park Theater Hudson.
I have always thought that people who decide to live in Hudson do not necessarily fit in elsewhere. Why move to Hudson? Why not live in Nutley, New Jersey? There are so many other, less expensive, easier, “normal” places to live.
The two-person play, A Christmas Memory & The Thanksgiving Visitor is for us, and anyone who has ever felt like an outsider.
The performance is in two acts, with intermission, they are two stories about seven-year-old Buddy and his sixty-something friend in depression-era Alabama. The performances, written by Truman Capote, are poignant and tear-jerkers. The Thanksgiving Visit is about Buddy bullied daily on his way to school. Buddy’s friend decides that the best way to deal with the town’s bully is to invite him to Thanksgiving Dinner.
In the second performance, we see Buddy and his friend’s friendship blossom over fruitcake and hopes and expectations on Christmas morning. As time goes by, we are reminded that things change, and precious, cherished moments do not last forever.
What makes this show a must-see are the extraordinary performances by the two actors, Marceline Hugot and Peter Frechette. They display a full range of emotions right before us. They are powerful and heart-warming.
The intimate setting of the Park Theater, and hot chocolate, make it a perfect place to run into friends and neighbors and catch up.
A Christmas Memory and The Thanksgiving Visitor remind us that family is wherever you find it.
