Made in England: The Films of Powell and Pressburger
2024 | NR | 131 min | Documentary
Martin Scorsese narrates and executive produced this documentary about the films of one of his primary influences (and his legendary editor Thelma Schoonmaker’s late husband) Michael Powell. Powell and his filmmaking partner Emeric Pressburger dominated British and American cinema in the late 1940s and 50s with an expressionistic, Technicolor visual style, notably shot by cinematographer Jack Cardiff (Black Narcissus, The Red Shoes, A Matter of Life and Death). Using rare archival material from the personal collections of Powell, Pressburger and Scorsese, Director David Hinton dials in to all three’s passionate devotion to the transcendent nature of cinematic art.

“The documentary is a personal, vibrant gift.” — Alissa Wilkinson, The New York Times
