Anat Cohen and Marcello Goncalves

Anat Cohen has been described (by Downbeat Magazine) this way.  “She is now to the clarinet what Stan Getz was to the tenor sax in the 60s.  ….a jazz musician who speaks the language so fluently that she has become a beacon of Brazilian music to the larger jazz world.”  Her performing partner, Marcello Goncalves, is considered Brazil’s most acclaimed seven-string guitarist.  Both are multiple Grammy nominees.
On Saturday, May 17th, this acclaimed duo will be appearing at Saint James Place in Great Barrington beginning at 5PM.  Tickets are available through Jazz and Classics for Change HERE.
A born collaborator, the clarinetist has recorded with multiple musicians – from a ten-piece group (called the Tentet), to her long-running family band, The 3 Cohens, and her on-going relationship with Goncalves, all resulting in acclaim and multiple Grammy nominations.  With Goncalves, their latest album, Outra Coisa: The Music of Moacir Santos, has been highly recommended since its release in 2017.  Listen HERE.
Both musicians are intrigued with the historical development of Brazilian music and their combined knowledge is reflected in their skilled performances.  Cohen fell in love with Choro, an instrumental genre of Brazilian popular music that has its origins in the Rio de Janeiro of the late 1800s. Goncalves was even musical director of Brasileirinho, a documentary about Choro music.  It is a unique Brazilian idiom – one which these 2 know intimately.
Together, Cohen & Goncalves are described as lyrical, folkloric and jubilant – just the right mood for a Saturday evening performance.
The concert begins at 5PM, May 17th at St. James Place, 352 Main Street, Great Barrington.
