I read that artist, Kate Skakel, would be performing and creating art in the Window on Hudson, so I took my video camera with me. However, the art that Kate created required her to sit in stillness for at least twenty minutes – so maybe a still image would be sufficient.
Kate Skakel’s art is a form of cyanotype, or printing with light. The fabric, a muslin, is covered in chemicals, and Kate sits on the fabric, surrounded by both natural and UV lights. Cyanotype is usually done with flowers, but Skakel uses her body to create the impressions.
The art created reflect our current status of waiting in quarantine. We are reminded that “sitting still” is often against what we are taught – that if something is wrong you are supposed to DO or SAY something. In these pandemic times, however, the answer may be to sit still, and not move.
