First Annual Wintermarkt at the Vanderpoel House Brings Festive Shopping and Holiday Cheer to the Historic House

The James Vanderpoel House, a landmark 1820 home, and Columbia County Historical Society property in Kinderhook, will host its first-ever Wintermarkt at the Vanderpoel House on Saturday, December 7th, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. This holiday market, curated by the creator of Mercantile at the Vanderpoel House, promises a unique and magical shopping experience that supports both local artisans and the Columbia County Historical Society (CCHS).

Wintermarkt will feature a select lineup of twelve of the best local makers offering artisanal, handmade, and antique gifts, on the first floor of the historic home. As a special bonus, beloved Hudson bakery Nine Cakes, which closed its doors in July, will be at the market for one time only selling their covetable holiday baked goods. (Customers may place pre-orders at ninecakes.com before Dec 1st, to guarantee their favorites for pick-up at Wintermarkt.)  

Shoppers will enjoy a festive atmosphere as Wintermarkt coincides with the CCHS’s annual Gallery of Wreaths, now in its 38th year. CCHS Executive Director Lisa Weilbacker shares, “The house will be adorned with over 40 wreaths, generously donated by the Wintermarkt vendors and community members, all available for bidding in the silent auction. It’s one of our most treasured traditions.”

The Mercantile at the Vanderpoel House, the evergreen shop within the house, will be transformed into a magical holiday shop, where guests can find one-of-a-kind Christmas decor and gifts. To make shopping even more special, the Mercantile will also host a gift wrap table at Wintermarkt. For a nominal fee, benefitting the CCHS, any gift purchased from the market or the shop can be elegantly wrapped on-site.

In addition to seasonal shopping, Wintermarkt will feature live Christmas music performed by local musicians Madison Shulkin and Séamus Maynard, adding to the market’s festive ambiance. A $5 donation is suggested at the door, with proceeds supporting CCHS’s ongoing work to preserve and celebrate Columbia County’s history.
