GRISWOLD

It’s 1960. America is on the eve of a sexual revolution, and an iconoclastic 65-year-old woman named Estelle Griswold decides to challenge the State of Connecticut’s anti-contraception law by engineering her own arrest. A timely, provocative, and thrillingly theatrical look at the first U.S. Supreme Court decision to recognize a right to sexual privacy, Angela J. Davis’ “Griswold” comes to Catskill’s Bridge Street Theatre in its first full production August 8-18. Estelle is a one-woman dynamo: self-taught, forward-thinking, unafraid of ruffling feathers – and she makes a mean martini.

She’s supported (and opposed) by a pair of chameleonic actors who play ALL the other characters including two young people whose own Supreme Court cases (and lives) were profoundly affected by the outcome of Griswold vs. Connecticut. And while the play deals with issues of enormous consequence, it transforms the story of this historic case into a highly theatrical, time-traveling romp for three accomplished actors. Featured in the cast are Margo Whitcomb, Leyla Modirzadeh, and Andre G. Brown. M. Burke Walker directs. Don’t miss this astonishing new play about a woman who set in motion a legal process that would do nothing less than change the world.
