On View: David Garland: The Behavior of Sunlight

This new exhibition shows at Lightforms Art Center, 743 Columbia St. in Hudson April 11-27 with an Opening Reception and Artist Talk Friday, Apr. 11 at 7 pm (doors open 6:30). Open Thurs.-Sun. 1-5 pm. Open Thursday-Sunday 5-7 pm.

The Behavior of Sunlight is a solo exhibition by photographer and musician David Garland. The show features Garland’s experimental photography since 2020, capturing the changing nature of sunlight and a unique visual poetry through reflection. These captivating images give both a macro and micro perspective on the world that is all around us. David writes “Like a mirage, these optical phenomena are real, but not the physical things they appear to be. …My images are discovered as much as created.”

Garland graduated from Rhode Island School of Design in1976, working soon after in NYC as a graphic designer for 10 years, while joining bands and beginning with innovative collaborators to create his own adventurous music during the later 19/70s and 1980s as part of the experimental New York sound. David Garland with his multi-instumental (acoustic, electronic, improvised, etc.) scorings and innovative collaborators has issued a dozen unique recorded albums since 1981. “David Garland has quickly become one of my favorite composers. Like many great composers before him, he pushes the limits of acceptable harmony and dissonance, yet never at the expense of beauty.” Sean Ono Lennon.

Since 1983 he has also presented unusual music on the radio through several NYC stations and programs – especially producing and hosting the podcast Spinning Air on NY Public Radio for 28 years, featuring many in-studio guest performances and interviews, including Patti Smith, Yoko Ono, Donovan, Les Baxter, Paul McCartney, They Might Be Giants, Incredible String Band, Van Dyke Parks, Animal Collective, Vashti Bunyan, Dirty Projectors, and many, many more.

On Fri, April 25, Garland will present a free musical performance with his improvisational group Music for Furniture. He writes, “Recently I’ve entered a new phase as a composer – Using a 12-string guitar specially modified [electronically] by my son Kenji Garland, as well as many other instruments.”

Garland has also worked as a freelance music journalist (reviews, liner notes, and a 200-page handbook on the history of science-fiction music included in the box set Brain in a Box: The Science-Fiction Collection). Currently he is also a freelance audio producer. For more information, see:
