On View: The Metamorphosis of Fear

Metamorphosis of Fear is an innovative group exhibition that weaves together painting, colored light projection, video, performance, sound, music, and social collaboration, inviting visitors to explore the complex emotions surrounding fear and courage.

This exhibition takes its inspiration from a pivotal moment in history. In 1918, as World War I drew to a

close, Rudolf Steiner, founder of anthroposophy, tasked musician and artist Jan Stuten with creating a new art form (as an alternative to cinema) that would blend sound, colored light, color-movement, and colored shadows in a way that would leave the viewer free to interpret what was seen. Steiner gave Stuten the theme Metamorphosis of Fear for the first work of this new art form: a theme related to people’s lingering experiences from the just-ended world war.

Today, in a world still grappling with various fears, we revive Steiner and Stuten’s theme through the collaborative efforts of a diverse group of contemporary artists. Visitors to the exhibition will journey through 15 stages of metamorphosis, beginning with fear and culminating in courage and calm. Come experience how art becomes a catalyst for reflection and connection in the face of contemporary challenges. Exhibition includes:

Laura Summer presents a series of striking 2′ x 4′ oil paintings, guiding viewers through every emotion on this journey through fear.

Katja Wishart (California)adds depth with her series of four abstract paintings, created from meditating on the theme of fear.

In the video chamber, Sampsa Pirtola, a Finnish video artist, showcases an abstract experimental film that captures the visceral essence of fear.

The animation of Loki Anthony & Nathanaël Blachere (New York) explores personal narratives of fear and loneliness, illustrating the idea that we each carry a candle within us that requires nurturing to shine.

Danish-American Zoï Doehrer will create an immersive multimedia performance by constructing a 126-square-foot “ice” space at the front of the gallery, where she will perform on ice skates with a video projection and installation elements.

Frank Agrama (California) in collaboration with different artists throughout November works with projected colored light.

The exhibition will also feature live musical performances by local artists including Soren Dietzel (saxophone), Kai Naor (guitar, piano, vocals), and Matt Sawaya (spoken word/music)
