Stephanie Rose, Seven Discourses on Post-Modernism 1982-1988

Philip Douglas Fine Art presents Stephanie Rose, Seven Discourses On Post-Modernism 1982-1988 Opening Reception
With numerous New York City & regional exhibitions in the 1970s thru the late 2000s painter Stephanie Rose (1943-2023) received wide critical review, catalogue texts and articles on her work from influential writers in Art in America, ARTnews, ARTFORUM, Tema Celeste with stand out solo shows at Albany Institute of History & Art, Susan Caldwell Inc., Betty Cunningham Gallery, E.M. Donahue, The Dactyl Foundation, Getler Paul Gallery and numerous group exhibition appearances. Rose’s work has been collected widely and resides in public collections at The Neuberger Museum of Art, The Denver Art Museum, The Tang Museum (Skidmore College), The University of Iowa Art Museum, The Reading Public Museum, The Albany Institute of History & Art among others. Rose attended Skidmore College receiving her BS & BFA in the mid 1960s and was mentored by sculptor David Smith whose influence ran deep and is apparent in her work. She taught graduate & undergraduate classes at Yale University, Parsons School of Design, The Pennsylvania Academy of Art, Pratt Institute and lectured widely. Her style grew out of the abstract expressionist movement and worked thru influences of reductive abstraction, Pattern & Decoration evolving into her mature style in the early 1980s incorporating abstracted figures engulfed in frenetic stage like settings & landscapes in a palette of intense color. Her later portraits of artists, writers & friends were utterly unique & original. In 1993 writer John Ash wrote in ARTFORUM:“Stephanie Rose’s pictures are, first of all, a reminder that in terms of technique she is simply one of the best painters around. Luckily Rose’s technical facility is at the service of a flamboyant imagination and a disciplined intelligence”.  This is Stephanie Rose’s first solo exhibit with Philip Douglas Fine Art. PDFA thanks her daughter Elizabeth Schub Kamir for allowing this show to be made possible and Tammis Groft, Director Emerita at the Albany Institute of History & Art for her help & support in this exhibition.
