World Premiere Commission at The Garage at Chatham: Charles Coleman’s “Quartet for a New Start”, inspired by Olivier Messiaen’s “Quartet for the End of Time”

Messiaen’s “Quartet for the End of Time”

Chatham, NY – The Garage at Chatham is proud to present Quartet for a New Start, a world premiere commission of composer Charles Coleman, on Saturday, July 13th at 6 p.m. at Cady’s Hall, located at 13 Main Street in Chatham.

Coleman’s new work is inspired by Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time, which was originally composed in 1941 under unique circumstances at a prisoner-of-war camp. Messiaen’s quartet featured a hauntingly beautiful blend of clarinet, violin, cello, and piano across eight movements.

Coleman, The Garage at Chatham’s composer in residence this summer, brings together acclaimed musicians Taka Kigawa on piano, Bixby Kennedy on clarinet, Emile-Anne Gendron on violin, and Chris Gross on cello to interpret this new work.

Critically acclaimed pianist Taka Kigawa, known for his exceptional virtuosity and profound musical interpretations, headlines this performance. With a career spanning prestigious venues worldwide from Carnegie Hall to Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Kigawa has garnered international acclaim for his solo recitals and collaborations with leading orchestras and conductors.

“We are thrilled to present this world premiere commission of Coleman’s ‘Quartet for a New Start’,” says co-founder Jon Morrell. “This performance not only celebrates Messiaen’s enduring legacy but also highlights the remarkable talent of Charles Coleman, Taka Kigawa, and our esteemed ensemble.”

All events are free and open to the public. It is truly a revival of the salon concerts of the 19th century- an essential format familiar to composers Schubert, Beethoven, Chopin, and Liszt.  Jon Morrell’s goal with the summer series is to promote new works/compositions and create a cultural, intellectual exchange between artists and the audience that can only be achieved within an intimate setting such as this.  The performances are always less than 90 minutes in length.
